By Sheriff (Ret) Currie Myers

Where is William Wallace?

William Wallace was a Scottish knight and landowner who is known for leading a resistance during the Wars of Scottish Independence and regarded as a patriot and national hero. Wallace enters history when he killed William Heselrig, the English Sheriff of Lanark, because of Briton’s tyranny over the Scots and to avenge the death of his young wife whom was killed by the sheriff’s men.

Wallace is an example of men that have placed their own personal and professional wealth aside and fought for freedom. Freedom that inspired our own Founding Fathers to respond to Briton’s tyranny and start the United State of America some 475 years later. Men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Adams.

Yes, our Founding Fathers understood tyranny and provided words to guide us even today. Such as:

  • James Madison – “I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.”
  • Alexander Hamilton – “It's not tyranny we desire; it's a just, limited, federal government.”
  • George Washington – “Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”
  • Thomas Jefferson – “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”
  • John Adams – “Democracy while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.”
  • William Wallace – “I'm William Wallace, and the rest of you will be spared. Go back to England and tell them... Scotland is free!”

Now 233 years later, American citizens are beginning to see a new breed of tyranny. A tyranny creeping from within our own government, at the local, state, and Federal level. America today and in the next few coming years will continue on its course of government bureaucracy, regulations, censorship, taxation and civic immorality.

Will America’s silent majority continue to choose to remain silent or will we stand and act against this tyranny from within?

Is there a new William Wallace ready to stand and lead us to true freedom? I pray this is so before, as Thomas Jefferson said, "Those who hammer their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not."

Will you stand with me and fight for freedom?
