Judge to Kansas Supremes – Let Grand Jury Proceed on Tiller
Story
A district court judge has told the Kansas Supreme Court that a proposed grand jury investigation into abortion provider Dr. George Tiller should be allowed to proceed. Michael Corrigan, chief judge of the 18th judicial district, described one of Tiller’s reasons for trying to block the Sedgwick County grand jury as “absurd.”

Ft. Riley booming again and so is the economy
Story
The goal is to build enough new facilities to handle a projected soldier population of more than 19,000 in the next three years. That means more barracks, offices, maintenance facilities, hangars for helicopters and other support structures. Additional housing is being built at an equally rapid pace in the surrounding communities.

$20 Million Tow Lot

“It’s the idea that a facility has the ability to send a positive image,” said Dan Maginn of El Dorado Architects. “It’s focusing on a quality building that is easily maintained and will last for a long time.” Maginn said the project illustrates that any facility, even one with an industrial purpose, can have an aesthetically pleasing design that provides an efficient employee workspace and promotes good customer service. The costs also have increased more than 251 percent, from an original estimate of $5.6 million to $19.7 million for the KCMO tow lot.

Tennis Anyone?

The council approved spending $78,136 to reconstruct the city’s tennis courts and install a new fence around them. The Parks and Recreation Committee said cracks throughout the courts are expanding and becoming a safety hazard. The city of Fairway has less than 4,000 citizens.

JCCC: Gun-aphobia?

When Johnson County Community College public safety officers answer a call, they carry a radio and handcuffs. Now their thinking about arming themselves. But freshman Juan Davalos, 21, had doubts about arming campus officers. “I wouldn’t feel safe being around people who have guns,” he said. And JCCC trustee Jon Steward opined, “You have to evaluate what’s the right thing to do for the campus.”
