“Bella” – A movie for all to see

Yet most people have never heard of the movie “Bella,” though the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas is working to change that. “I think it’s a great movie, with a subtle, positive message people will pick up on,” said Tom Zarda, a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Shawnee. Zarda viewed the movie at a recent pre-screening sponsored by the archdiocese. “I would especially recommend all young people see it,” he added. “I think they hear the pro-life message but don’t see it being played out like it is in ‘Bella.’ It leaves an impression on you.”

The Special Committee on Transportation is recommending that legislators take another look at a proposal to establish what is known as a graduated driver’s licensing system, under which 16- and 17-year-olds could receive only restricted licenses and many 14-year-olds would be denied learner’s permits.

Lawrence wants to tax your savings accounts

City Hall staff members recently prepared a report detailing how the city could begin requiring residents to pay a tax on the interest they earn on savings accounts, on the dividends they receive from stocks, and from a few other “intangible assets.” What!!!!!! A state law has been on the books since the early 1980s that allows cities, counties and townships to collect what is called an intangibles tax. More than 100 Kansas communities collect the tax. Lawrence is not one of them, but City Commissioner Boog Highberger said that might need to change.

Morrison advised KDHE Secretary to reject Coal Plant

Kansas AG Paul Morrison advised Rod Bremby, secretary of health and environment, that Kansas law allowed him to reject an air-quality permit over potential carbon dioxide emissions. Bremby’s rejection Thursday of a permit for Sunflower Electric Power Corp. prevents it from starting construction of its $3.6 billion project outside Holcomb.

Kansas Legislators demand explanation from AG

Now that Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline has filed charges against Planned Parenthood, three Johnson County lawmakers want to know why charges weren’t filed earlier. They submitted a letter Monday to Attorney General Paul Morrison asking him to explain why he cleared Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri of any criminal wrongdoing.

Citizens form coalition to stop city

The No to Overland Park coalition met Tuesday to organize a “rural tsunami” of opposition to what Chairwoman Lynne Matile called a “senseless takeover” of their homes, property and green space. Pro golfer Tom Watson, who knows a lot about green space, is listed as the group’s vice chairman. The group represents some 775 property owners who are “highly organized, circling their wagons and getting ready to dig in and be heard,” Matile said.

Garden City passes mandatory jail ordinance for no DL or insurance

"We are finding folks driving with no license, no insurance," Mayor Reynaldo Mesa said. "I am not happy doing some of these things, but at some point it is going to have to click: You can't do that. If you don't make an effort to get a license and buy and retain insurance, obviously there are going to be repercussions for that." Illegal alien rights groups are alarmed by the decision.
