Johnson County Sheriff Frank Denning says he thinks he can house an inmate for $30 less a day. Until now, Denning has put the cost of housing an inmate at about $103 a day.

Copper Thieves alive and well in Midwest

Thieves stole an undisclosed amount of copper from a Westar substation Thursday night, and when discovered, company officials had to bring the power down while repairs took place. Copper theft is rising across the Midwest.

Muslim inmate sues jail
Story
A Muslim inmate is suing a southwest Missouri jail, claiming the facility’s administrators violated his religious rights by feeding him sandwiches with a pork product concealed in them. Odell M. Edwards, as a Muslim, is prohibited from eating pork. Jail officials maintain that the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches did not contain pork, just fruit pectin extracted from plants. Pectin is a natural substance that thickens jams and jellies.

Minuteman leader speaks in Kansas City
Story
President and founder Chris Simcox and others from the Arizona-based organization met with the Kansas City police chief and local media members Monday, hoping to clear up what they say has been misinformation about their organization and its intent. He said Minuteman members serve as watchdogs for illegal activity.
