Taxes in Kansas are at an all time high. This year state and local taxes will capture 11.2 percent of the state’s income. At no other time in the state’s history have state and local governments imposed such a heavy tax burden on citizens. Three decades ago Kansas ranked among the low tax states. In recent years Kansas has ranked among the most heavily taxed states in the country.

The developer of a proposed 650-foot Edwardsville tornado monument has submitted plans that include a tentative commitment from A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. to underwrite $40 million of the project. Earlier this year, the Commerce Department said it would approve nearly $72 million in sales tax revenue bonds.

Abortion opponents turned over a petition Wednesday asking for a Sedgwick County grand jury to investigate late-term abortions by George Tiller. The petition contains 7,857 signatures, nearly three times as many as necessary to convene a grand jury.
