Sheriff Jim Pendergraph first noticed the changes in his jail population early in the decade, as illegal immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries poured into Charlotte and elsewhere in Mecklenburg County, N.C. More than 300,000 criminal aliens are expected to be held in local jails this year, according to a forecast last year by the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general. In addition, criminal aliens constitute more than a fourth of the inmates in federal prisons.

Public School – Can’t have Bibles

ADF attorneys filed a friend-of-the-court brief Wednesday in support of a parent barred from reading the Bible in her child’s classroom as part of a school assignment where parents were invited to read their child’s favorite book. The child, a kindergarten student, asked his mother to read from the Bible as part of a Social Studies assignment that had no content restrictions. On May 31, a federal district court sided with the school, and the case is now on appeal.
