The Johnson County grand jury is the county’s first since 1989. Also in session is a grand jury in Wyandotte County, thought to be the first there in at least 40 years. Each jury will sit for three months.
Blunt orders troopers to enforce immigration laws

Citing an “unnatural influx” of illegal immigrants, Gov. Matt Blunt on Monday ordered state troopers to start checking the immigration status of every person they arrest.
Mission to keep tax rate flat

The council approved an $18.6 million spending plan for next year that keeps the city property tax rate flat.
Kincaid Family gives large gift to Bishop Miege High School

Bishop Miege High School has doubled the size of its campus. Don and Patty Kincaid, of Mission Hills, donated 18 acres of adjacent land to the school Thursday evening. The property is the former campus of the Old Mission Junior High School.
Fairway mayor still pushing for City Hall

Susan McAlister, a Fairway resident, thinks the council has a tricky situation on their hands: They’re pursuing the city hall after voters proved they don’t want it. “I think, in general, anything that can be done to foster genuine communication between the people and their elected officials is a good thing,” said McAlister, after the meeting. “I think there are innovative and cost-effective ways to consider the city hall question without a costly major expansion.

Morrison wants to add another state bureaucracy

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius created the commission in late 2006 to help identify gaps and limitations of current school crisis planning. Attorney General Paul Morrison offered office space to the commission if it decides to evolve into an office or agency.
