American Indian Tribes are selling memberships to Illegal Aliens
Story
In Kansas, two Mexicans were indicted for allegedly trying to get U.S. passports and Social Security cards by claiming to be members of the Kaweah tribe. The U.S. attorney in Kansas is investigating fraud allegations against the Wichita-based tribe. Manuel Urbina, the tribe's high chief, acknowledged his group has sold at least 10,000 tribal memberships to illegal immigrants for about $50 each.

St Louis Police Officer Murdered

Police continued to search today for the suspect who killed officer Norvelle Brown, the third city officer gunned down since 2000. Brown, a 22-year-old on the force for less than a year, was shot to death about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday on the city’s north side. The bullet apparently entered through the side of the bulletproof vest.

Former Kansas AG wants Marijuana Legalized

Former Attorney General Bob Stephan said Wednesday he supports allowing marijuana for medical purposes. But the state’s chief law enforcement officer from 1979 to 1995, and a cancer survivor, declined to say whether he ever used marijuana to relieve pain. “I don’t think it’s relevant, so I’m not going to get into that,” Stephan said.

Ed Eilert cast a “no” vote along with Commissioners Dave Lindstrom and John Toplikar. The budget passed, 4-3. Eilert said the county needs greater fiscal discipline. County Chair Annabeth Surbaugh lead other liberal commissioners in passing the budget.

Suspect may have pushed police dog from roof

Kansas City police were investigating Wednesday whether a burglar was to blame for the death of a police dog that fell from the roof of a three-story building.

Deputy Attacked in Wyandotte County

Officials were looking for a 24-year-old suspect. Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Lt. Paul Arnold said the deputy was attempting to serve an eviction notice in the 1300 block of North 55th Drive when he was attacked.

Newman University overseeing vigorous changes

Newman University, located near downtown Wichita, is growing. Final work on the two-story, $14.3 million complex continues and at the same time, Newman is opening two new on-campus residence facilities. The only NCAA Division II private university in Kansas, Newman, a Catholic institution, success is predicated on learning that occurs "within the context of a moral and ethical frameworks," according to the schools new president.

County Commission gives $250,000 for area history projects

The Johnson County Commission has approved funding for various history-related projects throughout the county. Grants were awarded from the Johnson County Heritage Trust Fund, which gets its money from mortgage registration fees. The county received $316,971 in funding requests, and the trust fund Review Board recommended approval of $248,308 in spending.

School Librarian indicted on child pornography charges

A librarian at a Leavenworth elementary school has been indicted on child pornography charges. A federal grand jury indicted Anthony Baker, 35, of Leavenworth, on one count each of producing and possessing child pornography. According to the indictment, Baker is accused of enticing a minor to engage in explicit sexual conduct for the purpose of recording it on a digital camera.

Teacher and Coach charged with rape of student
Story
A teacher and coach at Ulysses High School have been charged with raping a 16-year-old female student. Rick Cue, 51, a social studies teacher who coaches Ulysses' softball and wrestling teams, is charged with two counts of rape. Other charges against him include aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Illegal Aliens drive uninsured and without licenses

But he's an illegal immigrant from Zacatecas, Mexico. Under a new state law, he will not be able to renew his driver's license when it expires in December or keep his auto insurance. "I need to work," he said. "I'm going to have to drive illegally. If I have an accident, I'll have to run."
