Proud American

The other day I was at a diner in a small town in northeast Missouri. It was Americana at its best. The values of Midwestern roots were alive and well in that restaurant. People were engaging in talk, local politics and the weather. Two farmers were discussing some crop planting techniques and talked about their concerns of our country over-using corn for ethanol. I also saw the vast majority of those patrons praying and giving thanks for their meals. I was really proud to be an American and all of a sudden our country didn’t seem to be so lost. Yes, we still have folks that care, that work hard, and serve something greater than themselves.

As I finished my meal and watched patrons engaged in their activities I began to think about my country and the ultimate love that I have for her. I thought about the 20-year career that I gave to the defense of our Constitution and to the protection of our people. It has all gone by so very quickly.

As an amateur historian, I always look to the past to see what our future entails. I thought about our founders and the trials and tribulations that they must have endured as they guided our future country into the path of success. I thought about how our people went west to settle an unknown and dangerous land. I thought about the entrepreneurs that helped our country become a financial success and grew this land to prosperity and I thought about our troops. Not only our present troops in harms way, but our past soldiers, sailors, and marines.

Our country has been blessed and I truly believe that the founding of this country, its past, present, and future is inspired by Divine Providence because the people of America have been rewarded by God’s grace. America and Americans are defenders. We defend the defenseless. We come to the rescue of others in peril. We understand the consequences behind our actions and we will place our own lives in jeopardy to ensure that freedom and righteousness prevails.

As you determine our future, I pray that you consider our past in determining our future. If you do this, America will continue to be the greatest nation for another generation.
