Victory! Supreme Court rules on 2nd Amendment
The Supreme Court ruled for the first time Monday that the Second Amendment provides all Americans a fundamental right to bear arms, a long-sought victory for gun rights advocates who have chafed at federal, state and local efforts to restrict gun ownership. The court was considering a restrictive handgun law in Chicago and one of its suburbs that was similar to the District law that it ruled against in 2008. The 5 to 4 decision does not strike any other gun control measures currently in place, but it provides a legal basis for challenges across the country where gun owners think that government has been too restrictive. "It is clear that the Framers counted the right to keep and bear arms among those fundamental rights necessary to our system of ordered liberty," Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. wrote for the conservatives on the court.

Confronting Unsustainable Growth of Entitlements
The growth of welfare spending is unsustainable and will drive the United States into bankruptcy if allowed to continue. President Barack Obama’s fiscal year 2011 budget request would increase total welfare spending to $953 billion—a 42 percent increase over welfare spending in FY 2008, the last full year of the Bush Administration. To bring welfare spending under control, Congress should reduce welfare spending to pre-recession levels after the recession ends and then limit future growth to the rate of inflation.

Freedom to Worship Replaces Freedom of Religion
Christianity Today looks at the way the State Department has recently begun using the phrase “freedom of worship” instead of “freedom of religion.” The Obama Administration sees these phrases as more or less equivalent. But “the softened message” is probably meant for the Muslim world, according to Carl Esbeck, professor of law at the University of Missouri. He told CT that Obama, “seeking to repair relations fractured by 9/11, is telling Islamic countries that America is not interfering with their internal matters.”

Join Today: Kansas City’s Neuhaus Society
Father Richard John Neuhaus’s work will be remembered and debated for decades. As a Lutheran pastor, he was one of the first civil-rights activists to identify the pro-life cause with the moral truths for which he and others had marched in Selma; he set the terms of the contemporary American church-state debate and added a new phrase to our public vocabulary with his 1984 bestseller, “The Naked Public Square.” As a Convert and then Catholic priest, he helped define new patterns of theological dialogue between Catholics and evangelicals, and between Christians and Jews. The journal he launched in the early 1990s, First Things, quickly became, under his leadership and inspiration, the most important vehicle for exploring the tangled web of religion and society in the English-speaking world.

Editorial: Freedom isn’t Free
By Sheriff (Ret) Currie Myers
Bernadette and I bring you a special Independence Day blessing from the Kansas Federalist E-Newsline. This weekend we should take time to pause and reflect on the history of this great nation. So as the BBQ’s fire up and the beverages are consumed please take a moment in prayer and reflection to thank our Founding Fathers for their deliberation and resolution in establishing the United States of America. The home of the free and the brave!
Today, we must repel borders against evil and wickedness. We must educate ourselves against the liberal elite that believes our Country is unjust and out of step with the times. Our Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers are all sacred documents that helped frame our great land. But these documents are scoffed at by many local, state and national elected leaders. Is your representative at these levels of government defenders of the Constitution or Progressives that bend the Constitution to meet their own will?
The best way to combat progressivism is with knowledge. That’s why we started the Kansas Federalist E-Newsline. To keep you informed on current events but to also offer practical solutions to help you discuss and counter liberalism. I believe John Adams said it best:
“If men through fear, fraud or mistake, should in terms renounce and give up any essential natural right, the eternal law of reason and the great end of society, would absolutely vacate such renunciation; the right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty, it is not in the power of Man to alienate this gift, and voluntarily become a slave.”
Bernadette and I asked you to consider a monetary gift to our E-Newsline this Independence Day. There is not a better way to state you freedom than helping spread the word to others!
Because after all, as Alexander Hamilton said, “Here sir, the people govern.”
