In Kansas, poverty rises despite the state's spending spree

Some legislators as well as taxpayer advocates say excessive spending has put Kansas on a collision course with fiscal disaster, and the state budget director has been warning legislators and agency heads that the state is on track to wrack up a budget deficit of $188 million by the end of FY 2010 and of $400 million the following year. But despite its recent habit of spending more than it earns, Kansas has seen a startling increase in the number of citizens living in poverty during the administration of Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

Responding to a furor over a state official's comments, a Wichita legislator and two advocacy groups have called for investigations into how child abuse cases are handled. State Sen. Jean Schodorf, R-Wichita, said she called the governor's office Friday to ask for a "top-to-bottom" investigation of the SRS office in Wichita "because we've been hearing so many complaints."

Metal Thieves Ransack Vacant Homes
Story
Scrap-metal thieves hit the vacant house on East 24th Street hard and fast. They stripped the wiring, snipped copper line from an air-conditioning unit and ripped out the kitchen sink, taking half the cabinet with it. In their haste, they left the water running — flooding the house and causing $7,000 in damage. Copper has risen to more than $3.75 a pound, and scrap iron has rocketed to $517 a metric ton, making them profitable targets for thieves who can make $50 to $300 in an hour ransacking a vacant house or business.

Businesses deal with increase theft/shoplifting

Retail theft is estimated to cost about $40.5 billion a year. And the rest of us, already squeezed by higher gas and food prices, end up paying for it: Stores pass on much of their losses to customers in the form of higher prices. "Retailers can't afford to just eat that loss," Hollinger says. "Their margins aren't large enough. So this hits right on the bottom line, and they're trying to plug up all of these leaks, because the economy is so tight." Among the reasons the sluggish economy is thought to be contributing to rising shoplifting by customers and store employees.

Cherokee County commissioner lets Klan reference slip out

Commissioner Pat Collins referenced the Klan during a Monday meeting about Terry's Outlet, a new adult-video store in Cherokee County in southeast Kansas. Collins was suggesting ways to close the store, which opened Friday, when he made the statement. "It's time to bring the Klan back, and put black, yellow and red people in those suits," Collins said.
