You can be carjacked while getting into or out of a car, while stopped at a traffic light or even while parked in a residential driveway. Here are some tips to keep it from happening to you: Be alert while driving. Avoid dangerous areas. Keep windows up and car doors locked. Leave room to maneuver out of a dangerous situation while stopped. Stay far enough behind the car in front of you that you can see where the rear tires of the vehicle touch the pavement. If you think you’ve been bumped intentionally, don’t leave your car. Motion for the other driver to follow you to the nearest police station. If confronted, give up your car. If your car breaks down and someone stops to help, open the window slightly and ask them to call for help. Ask uniformed officers to show identification.
