FTC floats Internet “Drudge” tax
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is seeking ways to "reinvent" journalism, and that's a cause for concern. According to a May 24 draft proposal, the agency thinks government should be at the center of a media overhaul. The bureaucracy sees it as a problem that the Internet has introduced a wealth of information options to consumers, forcing media companies to adapt and experiment to meet changing market needs.

Reappraising the Right
Written and published well before the policies of the current administration helped spark the growing Tea Party movement, “Reappraising the Right” puts the lie to any suggestion that the modern conservative movement is dead. True, the political landscape since Ronald Reagan has left many fearing for the future of free-market capitalism, representative government and personal and religious freedoms, which they feel will be abandoned in favor of over-regulation, high taxation, statism and the denigration of American exceptionalism. What is needed, according to Nash, isn't a new breed of conservatism, but, rather, a fresh dialogue between various conservative camps employing the same tools as the left – namely, the power of the Internet, where he perceives a tremendous intellectual energy. All is not lost, he asserts. Let's hope his optimism is warranted.

Business: Strangled by overtaxation and regulation
"May’s devastating jobs report should be a huge red flag to President Obama and Speaker Pelosi that we are on the wrong course. Small businesses — the backbone of our economy — are being strangled by overtaxation and onerous regulations coming from the Obama administration,” Tiahrt said. “How are jobs supposed to be created when a huge percentage of their income is taken to grow a bigger Washington?”

States Plunder 911 Funding
State governments are getting bolder about diverting funds intended to maintain and modernize 911 emergency calling systems for other uses. As states face greater budget gaps spurred by reckless spending and unsustainable obligations to the public sector employees, legislatures have been turning everywhere for extra cash. The 911 surcharge that appears on most consumer phone bills is no exception.

President Barack “Decorum” Obama
“I was down there a month ago, before most of these talkin’ heads were even paying attention to the gulf. A month ago I was meeting with fishermen down there, standin’ in the rain talking about what a potential crisis this could be. And I don’t sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar, we talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick.”

Why aren’t you buying the oil barriers
He’s already had a representative from BP visit his factory and inspect his product. The governor of Maine, John Baldacci, visited the facility and made a video plea to no one in particular to close the deal. Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins wrote a letter on May 21 to the secretary of the Interior, the administrator of NOAA, and the commandant of the Coast Guard to alert them to the existence of Packgen, their supply of boom, and their demonstrated capacity to make more. I have no idea if those are the correct persons and agencies to notify about the manufacturing capacity and the availability of boom.

'10,000' throng to stop Ground Zero mosque
As many as 10,000 protesters from across the country – including family members who lost loved ones on Sept. 11, 2001 – took to the streets in New York City Sunday to fight construction of a 13-story Islamic mosque to be built just steps from Ground Zero where Muslim terrorists murdered 2,751 people in the name of Allah.

EPA’s Regulatory Overreach on Global Warming
The Clean Air Act was never intended to address global warming, and regulations attempting to do so would be very troublesome for the economy. Fortunately, the Congressional Review Act was enacted to stop just such bad regulations. S.J. Res. 26, sponsored by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R–AK) would use the act to stop the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from imposing global warming regulations that would do tremendous economic damage in the years ahead.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the good, old-fashioned copy machine. But, as Armen Keteyian reports, advanced technology has opened a dangerous hole in data security. Your personal data from copies may be shared with anyone who acquires the copy machine.

Adult Stem Cells, Not Embryonic Cells, Raises Hope
An earlier study on 21 adults in the Lancet also showed that stem cells could halt the progress of the disease and even show some improvement. The idea is that if caught early enough the stem cells could protect patients from the permanent damage caused to nerve cells and prevent disability.

The Birds and the Bees (via the Fertility Clinic)
If you want to adopt a child in the United States, you’ll face an array of bureaucratic roadblocks and invasive interrogations. If you want to procure sperm or eggs, the process is completely different. The result is a freewheeling fertility marketplace whose impact on American life keeps increasing.

Singer Andrea Boccelli: I Was Almost Aborted
God has a purpose for every human life, even if they are born with disabilities. What would the world have been like without Andrea Bocelli, Italian pop, opera, and classical singer? The liberal confab welcomed the most powerful progressive in the nation — yes, that’s Nancy Pelosi, not Barack Obama — to speak on the future of the agenda that has voters about ready to press the reset button in November. A group of protesters tried to shout Pelosi down, apparently for not committing political suicide fast enough for them.

Gospel of St. Matthew 5:13-16

13 You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, with what will it be salted? It is no longer useful at all, except to be cast out and trampled under by men. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. 15 And they do not light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that it may shine to all who are in the house. 16 So then, let your light shine in the sight of men, so that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father, who is in heaven.

Driveway Tax
Wayne Godsey, KMBC President And General Manager

It's like adding insult to injury. Mission, Kan., taxpayers who've just watched the Legislature increase the sales taxes are now hearing that their city administrator is suggesting a transportation utility fee to fund street maintenance and a new bus line.

The idea is to tax the number of trips to and from homes and businesses in the city. If implemented, the average single-family home in Mission would pay an additional $72 per year, with stores and businesses paying even more. But the trips won't actually be counted; they will be estimated by transportation engineers. Critics are calling it a driveway tax.

Citizens may be struggling to survive the current recession, but it is obvious that state and local governments don't intend to participate. Instead of reducing government programs and delaying projects, they are piling additional financial burdens on families. What better way to extend the recession, and delay the recovery.
