House Conservatives Stepping Up to the Plate
Story
Conservative Republicans in the House plan to urge their colleagues to rally behind a new manifesto that mixes anti-spending initiatives and tighter restrictions on government benefits as the party seeks a fresh message after a string of election defeats. Leaders of the Republican Study Committee intend to use a closed-door party meeting on Tuesday to present a seven-point proposal calling for a constitutional limit on federal spending, a new simplified income tax alternative and a proposal to require recipients of food stamps or housing aid to meet work requirements.
Gas Pricing – It’s not the Oil Companies!
Story
We have a tendency for blaming corporate oil for everything, including high gas prices. But in reality, prices are a function of the open market, the result of futures contracts being traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange, or Nymex, and other exchanges. Buying the current July crude oil futures contract means you are buying oil that will be delivered by the end of July. But most who trade futures have no intention of ever accepting the underlying oil: Like stock investors who frequently buy and sell their holdings, they are simply betting that prices will rise or fall. Of late, on the Nymex, oil futures have been rising. Why? Blame the falling dollar. Oil is priced in U.S. dollars, and the weaker the dollar gets, the more attractive dollar-denominated oil contracts are to foreign investors — or any investor looking for a safe haven in the turbulent stock market. The rush of buyers keeps pushing oil futures to a series of new records, and the rest of the energy complex, including gasoline futures, has followed. That pushes up the price of gas that goes into your tank.

Governor rejects abortion after Down syndrome diagnosis
Story
Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska is known for being attractive (a former pageant winner, she was featured in a Vogue photo shoot this year), forceful (her opponents have nicknamed her "Sarah Barracuda") and a possible running mate for John McCain. Challenging circumstances now also have made her a shining example of personal pro-life convictions. After being informed that her baby would have Downs Syndrome and she should consider abortion, the Conservative Governor and her husband stated, "Many people will express sympathy, but you don't want or need that, because Trig will be a joy…Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this mixed-up world…Trig is no different, except he has one extra chromosome."

Immigration chief urges businesses to clean up hiring practices
Story
Based on experiences like that, Myers, who leads U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, thinks that to solve the illegal immigration problem, companies must do more to ensure they are not hiring illegal immigrants. “I’m convinced that drying up the job magnet for illegal aliens would be the single most effective thing we could do to stem the tide of illegal aliens coming into this country,” Myers said during an address Tuesday afternoon to human resources professionals, company lawyers and businesspeople.

The Family is a Fiscal Issue
Story
Some supporters of free markets and limited government are wary of expressing any policy preferences about the family. The idea that marriage should be the appropriate context in which to raise children seems to them an arbitrary imposition of a moral code on others. They applaud the efficiency of the free market, but they are reluctant to "privilege" marriage over other types of households as the expected context for childrearing. Other market supporters situate the market within a wider context of human liberty and dignity. The free economy is one aspect of an overall view of society that emphasizes the priority of culture over governments. These advocates hold that it is a mistaken application of consumer and market ideas to the family to believe that family form is nothing but a personal choice. Our private decisions can have significant costs to the people around us, including taxpayers.
California Court's Judicial Activism Threatens the Institution of Marriage
Story
The activist California Supreme Court's decision creating a constitutional right to same-sex "marriage" was a bad decision. Though supporters of same-sex "marriage" may like the outcome, by usurping the question from the political branches—which in California had been willing to compromise concerning domestic partnership for same-sex couples—the Court creates an all-or-nothing question that can no longer be answered by ordinary political means. The decision makes it all the more likely that California will ban same-sex "marriage" by means of a state constitutional amendment in November 2008 in order to take the issue back from the judiciary. California already had a law defining marriage as the union between one man and one woman, but the state Supreme Court brushed it aside, claiming that the law violated the state constitution. The California decision shows that a state constitutional amendment is vital to the protection of marriage.
Dem’s Divided on Obama's Call for Repealing DOMA
Story
A sampling of Senate Democrats expressed sharply divergent views yesterday on whether they would support Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) call to "fully repeal" the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which in the wake of this week's California Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage as well as a similar 2003 decision by the high court of Massachusetts, would have the effect of legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.
Coulter: “If We Could Talk to the Animals”
Story
You always know you've struck gold when liberals react with hysteria and rage to something you've said. So I knew President Bush's speech at the Knesset last week was a barn-burner before even I read it. Liberals think the way to deal with dangerous tyrants is to send in a sensitive president who will make Ahmadinejad fall in love with him. They imagine Obama becoming Ahmadinejad's psychotherapist, like Barbra Streisand in "The Prince of Tides." President Bush described such people perfectly with his reference to Sen. William Edgar Borah, the one who said World War II could have been avoided if only he could have talked to Hitler.

Seven Reasons to Veto the Farm Bill
Story
Lawmakers should examine whether farm policies that were created in the 1930s to assist poor family farmers during the Great Depression make any sense in the current era of hugely profitable agribusinesses. The first step toward reform is to reject this status quo farm bill and go back to the drawing board. The President should veto this farm bill for its backwards steps on reforms.
