Sebelius Violates Campaign Ethics Law?
Story
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ campaign committee sent out a fundraising e-mail that could run afoul of the state ethics law. The email sent to about 70,000 people in which Sebelius reviewed the recent fight over plans for two coal-fired power plants. At the end of the message, the reader was invited to click on a link to a Web site where a donation could be made to the committee. State law bans legislators, statewide officials and candidates for those offices from seeking or accepting donations from lobbyists, corporations or political action committees while the Legislature is in session.

Governor raises vehicle registrations by $4
Story
Fees will increase by $4 to register a vehicle in the state under a compromise bill signed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. The increase begins in January and will last four years, raising the cost to about $40.

Archbishop responds to questions concerning Sebelius

Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, who two weeks ago published a column in which he asked Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to refrain from receiving Communion because of her support of legalized abortion, today devoted a page and a half of The Leaven, the archdiocesan newspaper, to answer questions raised by his decision.

Families sue Catholic school over ’English only’ policy

Four Hispanic families are suing St. Anne’s Catholic School over a policy that requires students to speak English at all times while at school. Diocese spokesman Fred Solis called the lawsuit unfortunate, saying the church has historically offered support and services to minorities and spoken out for immigrant rights. The diocese has said the school enacted the policy in response to four students who were using Spanish to bully others and to put down teachers and administrators.

Lawsuit filed against KC’s smoking ban
Story
Nine establishments sued Kansas City government today in Jackson County Circuit Court over the city’s recently adopted smoking restrictions. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the New Majestic Steakhouse, Dave’s Stagecoach Inn, the Peppermill Lounge South, Diebel’s Sportsmens Gallery, Ward Parkway Lanes, the Brooksider Sports Bar and Grill, Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, the Dark Horse Tavern, and Buzzard Beach.
