A longtime Democratic fundraiser has been convicted of violating campaign finance laws. A Manhattan jury convicted Norman Hsu (SHOO) on Tuesday. The case became an embarrassment to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other prominent Democrats. Prosecutors said the 58-year-old Hsu used straw donors to make thousands of dollars in donations so he could bypass rules limiting the amount he could donate. And now that the country is in recession, several veterans of hotel security say, there's a greater likelihood that becoming a victim to travelers. "We're absolutely seeing an increase in crime at hotels," says Philip Farina, CEO of Enterprising Securities, a San Antonio company that designs security programs for hotels.

Thief steals KC officer's bag from marked patrol car
Police say a thief stole a Kansas City sergeant's equipment bag from his patrol car while the officer chased a pair of carjacking suspects. The Kansas City Star reported on its Web site that police said the sergeant pursued the suspects early Sunday after they abandoned the vehicle taken in the carjacking. The officer caught one of the suspects, but the other got away. The sergeant returned to his patrol car to find his equipment bag missing from the back seat. The bag contained a gas mask, handcuffs, rain gear, two ticket books and other items. Kansas City police still were trying to find the bag and a suspect Monday.

Secret pact between former KSU coach, athletic director
During the past six months, Kansas State University fans have come to accept $1.2 million as the cost of ridding their valued football program of former coach Ron Prince and his mediocre success in three seasons. Turns out it’s worse than they thought. The new price tag is $4.4 million. Prince, now an assistant coach at the University of Virginia, is scheduled to receive $3.2 million more in payments from 2015 to 2020 in addition to the buyout amount from his August 2008 contract extension. It’s all because of what K-State officials say is a “secret agreement” signed last August by Prince and Bob Krause, K-State’s former athletic director.

Kansas universities propose tuition, fee increases
College students at Kansas Universities could see their tuition and fees for a semester of school increase by 5.5 percent in the fall. The regents, who oversee the state’s colleges and universities, listened to the heads of the six universities pitch their proposed increases; the board will likely vote on the proposals during its June meeting.

11,000 marijuana plants seized
Authorities said today they still have no suspects in connection with the discovery of nearly 11,000 cultivated marijuana plants in a rural, wooded area south of Goddard on Friday. While the plants were still young when discovered, the estimated value of the marijuana at maturity would be nearly $8.75 million, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Capt. Annette Haga said.

There is a dire need for a top-to-bottom examination of federal spending, which your bill would provide. By seeking out duplicative, inefficient, and outdated or failed programs, the cleanup effort would be a nice breath of fresh air for taxpayers all over the country.
