Shameful: Senate Fails to Override Abortion Veto
Story
The Kansas Senate failed by two votes Wednesday to override the veto of a bill aimed at strengthening late-term abortion laws. The vote was 25 in favor of the override and 14 against. It takes a two-thirds majority, or 27 Senate votes, to override a governor’s veto. Barbara Allen, Overland Park; John Vratil, Leawood; David Wysong, Mission Hills should be ashamed for themselves.

The Senate on Wednesday overrode Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' veto of a bill allowing the expansion of a coal-fired power plant in Holcomb on a day filled with action on the energy issue. Senator David Wysong of Mission Hills sides with Sebelius and voted no.

The Legislature fell short of delivering a crippling blow Thursday to the governor's campaign to limit new emissions of carbon dioxide in Kansas, failing to overturn her veto of a bill clearing the way for state approval of a coal-fired power plant expansion in the tiny community of Holcomb. Senate President Steve Morris, R-Hugoton, said it was agonizing to see Sebelius standing in the way of the large economic development initiative. Costs of Library Project Out of Control

Leawood Pioneer Library will be larger and more environmentally friendly when a renovation and expansion project is completed next fall. An 8,000-square-foot expansion using “green” building materials will be added to the east side of the building. Also, the existing building will be renovated to feature a complete interior redesign. The estimated cost of the new project is $5.6 million.
