You get what you deserve
Public apathy towards politicians and elections has reached an all-time low. Most people, including registered voters, could care less about upcoming elections. Especially when they are at the bottom of the ticket or during the spring elections cycle.
In the city spring elections across Johnson County, about 50% of those elections were unopposed. Unopposed! Local government and local control is a real good thing. It’s government at the lowest level and many times you can have an immediate impact. This was the case recently in Westwood, when citizens were tired of that city’s tax and spend policies and increased regulations over home ownership. As a result, there is a new Mayor and two new council members.
But you must be involved. Citizen apathy can be disastrous. Local government leaders have to be held accountable for their taxing increases and increased regulations. Yes, it takes time and effort to run for office and once in office to govern. It’s called public service, and it’s how America is supposed to be governed.
It does take sacrifice to run for office. But if you good care less about local government, then you get what you deserve!
