March, 2007: From the Kansas Federalist -- Senator Fred Thompson

Each month the Kansas Federalist will bring a topic of noted interest to the forefront for discussion and focus our entire edition with information about that topic. For March, TKF has chosen “Senator Fred Thompson”.

Fred Dalton Thompson
A background piece about Thompson. "After two years in Washington, I often long for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood." From a speech given by Thompson before the Commonwealth Club of California.

Why Fred Thompson Should Run
His voting record is solidly conservative. He is articulate, self-made (his father was a car salesman), highly intelligent, and exudes calm authority. His star power offers him an opening with independent voters that other candidates can only dream of, while his solid conservative credentials will excite the Republican base.

Thompson has set aside April 18 and will meet with members of Congress. Rep. Wamp said he has already lined up over 40 members who are interested in the Thompson candidacy.

Ever the conservative, ever the towering government official with a booming Southern accent, Fred Thompson has stuck to his lifelong routine: playing himself.

A Nonpartisan Reputation at Stake
Former senator Fred Thompson said that win or lose, Fitzgerald will be judged as a prosecutor run amok who chased petty political crimes "to the ends of the Earth."

Is Fred Thompson the Next Reagan?
Thompson has several things going for him that would propel him to the top of not only the GOP candidates, but all candidates. He has instant visual and voice recognition from his myriad acting roles. He is a man who exudes optimism and conveys the feeling of national pride, exactly like Reagan. He communicates his ideas in a forthright manner, yet is unyielding in doing what he thinks is best for the country.

Bill Frist Endorses Fred Thompson
I've not talked with Fred personally about a potential run, so I am basing my thoughts simply on knowing him well, having worked with him in policy and politics everyday for 8 years, and knowing the people across America want a genuine leader who represents them.

Drafting Fred Thompson
Thompson, the former Tennessee Republican senator who's now a Law & Order prosecutor and regular replacement for radio host Paul Harvey, is being urged by supporters to consider entering the presidential race, according to associates. "The draft Fred movement is growing," says one ally.

Lights, Camera . . . Candidacy?
J.C. Watts, an Oklahoma congressman from 1995 to 2003, has endorsed him: "I define Fred Thompson as AC, what's AC? All class." Craig Hammond, a former mayor of Bluefield, W.Va. He told the Bluefield News: "He's the tall timber we've been waiting for. He's the total package. He can hold the red states and pick up a few blue ones along the way."

Fred wins county poll in Georgia
The national frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani, placed third, right behind Georgia’s own Newt Gingrich, who finished second. But the winner was former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee, who received more votes than all the other candidates combined. Fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh place went to Romney, McCain, Huckabee and Brownback, in that order.

President Fred?

Are we ready for a Fred to be President? Is Senator Fred Thompson the next Ronald Reagan? No, but then again only Reagan was Reagan and constant comparisons to our great President are hard for anyone to live up too. Thompson is however his own man and his Reagan-like attitude and policies are interesting in the political world to say the least. From all my research, Thompson’s stances are based on the grounds of Federalism. He has been quoted as saying, "I'm consistent. I am a Federalist noting that more issues should be left to the states, but the U.S. government should play a pivotal role in direction and leadership.” Thompson says, "Washington overreaches, and by doing so ends up not doing well the basics people really care about."

As Republican counsel in the Watergate hearings, he began building a reputation as a straight shooter. It was he who asked the question that forced a White House deputy to admit that Richard Nixon had secretly recorded his Oval Office conversations. But Mr. Thompson appears serene about all the speculation swirling around him. "Those running are all good guys, and would be good presidents," he says leaning back in a recliner. "But there are truly vital issues--from the looming entitlement crisis to nuclear proliferation.”

Thompson’s voting record also backs up his straight shooter mindset. From life issues to gun control, from fiscal responsibility to limited government, from protecting citizens from bad public policy to proactive stances on war, Thompson has a conservative populist message that resonates well across a broad spectrum of America.

Conceding that McCain-Feingold, in which he supported, hasn't worked. He now supports looking at taking off the limits and have full disclosure with harsh penalties for not reporting everything on the Internet immediately." Indeed, the federal government's inability to function effectively would likely be a major theme of any Thompson campaign. "Audits have shown we've lost control of the waste and mismanagement in our most important agencies. It's getting so bad it's affecting our national security."

The next president needs to exercise strong leadership and get down in the weeds and start fixing problems. Thompson hasn’t offered specifics on what to do yet as a President, because he hasn’t announced. But his voting record and public comments should bode well with Republicans as well as bringing back Reagan Democrats who will like his leadership and openness on solving problems. Most importantly, Thompson brings a level of civility and humility into the forum, which is a stark contrast to many modern day national politicians!
