New Conservative Israeli Prime Minister to Slash Taxes and Cut Spending!
Benjamin Netanyahu plans to apply the same small-government policies when he becomes Israel’s prime minister as he did six years ago as finance minister. Then, his tax and spending cuts helped lift the economy out of recession. Are you watching Obama?

Kuwaiti professor: 330,000 dead from 4 pounds of anthrax
A professor from Kuwait, the country liberated from Saddam Hussein's attack squads by the United States in the first Gulf War, has called Islamic terrorists "the most honorable people in the world" and has outlined on Arab television a potential terror attack that would involve smuggling anthrax from Mexico into the U.S. and killing 330,000 people in 60 minutes. Al-Nafisi, whose school affiliation was not identified, says: "Four pounds of anthrax in a suitcase this big carried by a fighter through tunnels from Mexico into the U.S., are guaranteed to kill 330,000 Americans within a single hour, if it is properly spread in population centers there."

Obama seeks 'assault weapons' ban
The Obama administration has announced a sweeping plan to help curb Mexican violence across the border – ban "assault weapons" in the United States. "As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Attorney General Eric Holder said in a news conference at the Justice Department yesterday.

Obama's $300 billion-a-year climate-change plan
Barack Obama plans to include in his 2010 budget the introduction of a massive energy cap-and-trade system designed to raise $300 billion a year for the federal government in a bid to get industry to curtail emissions of so-called "greenhouse gases." The plan would force companies to buy permits from the government for greenhouse gas emissions above a certain cap. Acknowledging that businesses would have no choice but to pass their costs on to customers, resulting in skyrocketing utility bills for homeowners and offices, the administration is pledging to redistribute most of the revenue back to in the form of government relief.

Incredible! Washington sends $1 food stamp checks to 250,000
The state of Washington sent out $1 checks to the 250,000 food stamp recipients in the state. The director of the Community Services Division for the Department of Social and Health Services, Leo Ribas, says the checks mailed Feb. 17 trigger an additional $43 million in federal food benefits. They also connect recipients to an energy assistance program. Ribas says the $1 check is a one-time move to leverage the federal money. He says next year the state will be able to trigger the federal assistance through a routine deposit in food stamp accounts.

Unemployment Marks 26 Year High
New jobless claims rose more than expected last week and the number of laid-off Americans continuing to receive unemployment benefits topped 5.1 million, fresh evidence the recession is increasingly forcing employers to shed jobs. As a proportion of the work force, the number of people continuing to receive benefits has reached its highest point since July 1983.

Spring Break Travel Advisory: Stay Out of Mexico
Going to Mexico for spring break is practically a rite of passage for college students in Arizona, but the state's three public universities want to warn young revelers about stepped-up violence south of the border. The University of Arizona in Tucson has issued a travel advisory urging students not to go to Mexico, and officials at Arizona State University in Tempe and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff said they have similar plans to warn students. The schools' spring breaks fall on the second or third weeks of March. In its notice to students, UA cited a travel alert issued by the U.S. Department of State in October warning travelers that crime rates have increased sharply in Tijuana, Juarez and Nogales - all Mexican cities that have experienced public shootouts during the daytime in shopping centers and other public places. The department warned that criminals have followed and harassed Americans driving in border areas.

Massive Tax Increases Loom as Democrats Begin to Talk Fiscal Responsibility
With massive tax increases waiting in the wings for American taxpayers when the Bush tax cuts end in 2010, the Obama administration and Congressional Democrats will soon turn their attention to taxes. Part of the discussion is sure to include the impending tax increases set to hit every American taxpayer when the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010, unless Congress acts to extend them. During the presidential campaign, then-Sen. Barack Obama pledged to repeal the tax cuts.

Argentina calls CIA comment "irresponsible"
Argentina on Thursday blasted the head of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency for saying the country, along with Ecuador and Venezuela, could be pushed into instability by the global economic crisis. Lumping Argentina together with Ecuador and Venezuela, both led by leftist anti-Washington firebrands, raises concern in this country, where center-left President Cristina Kirchner is trying to keep the economy from stagnating.
Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana called the comments made on Wednesday by CIA Director Leon Panetta "unfounded and irresponsible, especially from an agency that has a sad history of meddling in the affairs of countries in the region." Is this Obama’s plan to get along with other countries?

Virginia Considers Law to Allow Police Chaplains to Say 'Jesus' While Praying
Members of a Virginia Senate committee may vote Monday to advance a bill that would re-instate the right of state police chaplains to pray “in Jesus Name, or “in the name of Allah” – or to refer to other religion’s deities in their prayers.

Pro-Life Hero Bishop Dolan Picked to Lead New York Catholics
New York City is considered the abortion capital of the U.S., with more abortions done per 1,000 women than anywhere else in the nation. However, the metropolis is about to get a new pro-life advocate in Timothy Dolan, the former Milwaukee Archbishop Pope Benedict has chosen to succeed Cardinal Edward Egan. Egan, who is 76, is retiring as archbishop after nearly nine years and the pope selected Dolan to become the next archbishop of New York on Monday. Dolan, who is strongly pro-life, will lead what is the second largest diocese in the United States, behind the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, but is considered the most prestigious Catholic post in the nation. For the pro-life movement, Dolan has been a strong friend and ally and has been called a "hero" by leading pro-life advocates. "It bothers me if any politician, Catholic or not, is for abortion," Dolan has said. "Because in my mind, we're talking about a civil right, we're not talking about a matter of Catholic Church discipline. We can't allow the noble pro-life cause to be reduced to a denominational issue." Last year, Dolan took House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice-President Joe Biden to task for misrepresenting Catholic pro-life teachings.

Byrd: Obama in power grab
Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest-serving Democratic senator, is criticizing President Obama’s appointment of White House “czars” to oversee federal policy, saying these executive positions amount to a power grab by the executive branch. ??In a letter to Obama on Wednesday, Byrd complained about Obama’s decision to create White House offices on health reform, urban affairs policy, and energy and climate change. Byrd said such positions “can threaten the Constitutional system of checks and balances. At the worst, White House staff have taken direction and control of programmatic areas that are the statutory responsibility of Senate-confirmed officials.”

Cashill: Ayers already turning on Obama
You did not have to be a weatherman to know that terrorist emeritus Bill Ayers would quickly blow cold on the Obama presidency. Still, the speed and the severity of Ayers' criticism, let alone the medium for doing so, shocked even veteran Ayers watchers. On Monday, less than five weeks into the Obama era, Ayers blasted Obama's decision to send additional troops to Afghanistan as a "colossal mistake."

Kansas House advances coal plant legislation Legislators who support a plan to build two coal-fired power plants in western Kansas say they’re ready to take on Gov. Kathleen Sebelius for a second year. The chamber gave first-round approval to the bill Thursday, with a final vote expected Friday. This time, House Speaker Mike O’Neal said, they expect to have enough votes to override Sebelius’ expected veto of a bill that would allow Hays-based Sunflower Electric Power Corp. to build its plants outside Holcomb, in Finney County.

White House Officials Admit Abortion, Tiller Holding Up Kathleen Sebelius Pick
White House officials have acknowledged that abortion and the controversy surrounding embattled late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller are holding up President Barack Obama's potential selection of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to become the next Health Secretary.

Sebelius and HHS: A sick joke?
So George Tiller’s pet governor is the latest name floated by Barack Obama as his pick for Health and Human Services secretary. My first reaction was one of shock. I mean really, this woman has laundered more money than a riverboat casino, collecting checks from the abortion industry and dispersing cash amongst Democratic politicians throughout the state. Surely this trumps the tax problems by Tommy “Miss Daisy” Daschle, in sheer cash value if nothing else. I strongly considered supporting those issuing a public outcry at this ridiculous nomination.

Judge: Criminal case against Tiller can proceed
Judge Clark Owens ruled this afternoon that a criminal case against late-term abortionist Dr. George Tiller can proceed. Owens, a Sedgwick County District Court judge, denied motions filed by Tiller’s attorneys that evidence be suppressed or the case be dismissed. That clears the way for a trial to begin March 16. Tiller is accused of 19 misdemeanor counts of failing to get an unaffiliated physician to concur that late-term abortions were medically necessary, as required by Kansas law.

Continued funding urged for 'Pregnancy Maintenance' program
Children are alive today because of an inexpensive program that has been targeted for defunding by the Sebelius administration, a spokesman for the Kansas Catholic Conference testified during a hearing before a Senate Ways and Means subcommittee Tuesday. The program, the Pregnancy Maintenance Initiative, already endured a 25 percent cut in the current fiscal year, and Sebelius and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) are recommending that it be defunded altogether in fiscal year 2010, Michael Schutloffel, executive director of the Catholic Conference, told Kansas Liberty Wednesday. Pro-life groups, including Kansans for Life and Operation Rescue, joined with the Catholic Conference in opposing the effort to defund the program, particularly in light of the fact that the state continues to provide funding for Planned Parenthood programs. Planned Parenthood is one of the area's most active abortion providers.

Kansas bill to abolish death penalty gets hearing
A bill abolishing the Kansas death penalty is scheduled to have a Senate committee hearing. The Judiciary Committee plans to hear testimony Thursday on the proposal by Sen. Carolyn McGinn, a Sedgwick Republican. It plans to vote Friday on whether to send the bill to the chamber for debate. McGinn says abolishing the death penalty would save the state money because it would eliminate the high costs of capital cases. The bill would ban the death penalty after July 1 but wouldn't change death sentences already imposed. The last time the state carried out an execution was in 1965. Senate leaders say it's hard to gauge the level of support because only three of the 40 senators were around when the death penalty was reinstated in 1994.

Wiley Looks Impressive in Fairway Mayor Race
Four Fairway residents who are fed up with their city government and are running against their mayor for his position. But one in particular is seeing a lot of support. And that is retired FBI agent Jerry Willey. Others up against Mayor John St. Clair are Penny Gilbert, who works in real estate, Don Andrade, a retired business owner, and Mike Meister, an engineer. Wiley wants to see more transparency and fairness in Fairway’s government. They want the City Council to be more open and to give residents’ input more consideration. Wiley believes that citizens should be able to ask questions and receive answers on public record at all City Council meetings. He also feels the Fairway government should honor the petition process and a public vote should guide elected officials at every opportunity. A number of residents are unhappy with the current Mayor. Mayor John St, Clair has pushed a newly constructed Mission Bridge that was not needed, more government spending and a larger City Hall.

Foster Focuses on Fiscal Discipline in Roeland Park Race
Three candidates are competing for the office of mayor in Roeland Park: council members Scott Gregory and Adrienne Foster, and incumbent Steve Petrehn. Adrienne Foster, a Ward 4 councilwoman, has served four years on the council. She is the current administration committee chair and is the former finance chair. She serves as an officer in two National League of Cities organizations, the Hispanic Elected Local Officials and Women in Municipal Government. If elected, Foster said she would facilitate efficient and effective meetings. “My goal is to move the city forward and help the council make decisions,” she said. “I will be a mediator, not an activist.” She favors tabling the idea of a new City Hall for 10 years and saving money to renovate the existing hall to address police department safety needs. Petrehen says he is in favor of promoting public transportation and an active, healthy lifestyle for Roeland Park children and adults. In the past, he has been at odds other Roeland Park leaders on his belief in more taxes and more spending.

Leap and Bogan Show Potential in Merriam
With Tuesday’s primary election quickly approaching, campaigns are well underway for the four candidates running for mayor of Merriam. Incumbent Carl Wilkes, City Councilman Dan Leap, Stoney Bogan and Ken Sissom have been hitting the pavement in an effort to inform citizens what their priorities will be if elected to office. Leap and Bogan are opposed to any kind of tax increase to make up for revenue shortfalls.
“Merriam real estate property taxes increased 28 to 30 percent in just one year,” Leap said. “That stops. Small businesses and homeowners are barely staying afloat. City government should not add to their burden by increasing taxes.” Leap said he would eliminate non-essential expenditures to ensure the city spends only the funds it has on hand. Sissom and Wilkes said they would support another tax increase.

So much for Business Development in Mission – Travel and Tourism Instead!
The council established the Mission Convention and Visitors Bureau and eliminated the Mission Business Development Committee. Committee members will be transferred to the bureau.

"Tim Huelskamp is a rare breed of leader who boldly stands up for conservative principles...and a voting record to prove it.”
- Governor Mike Huckabee on Kansas Congressional Candidate, Sen. Tim Huelskamp

From Proverbs 15:29
“The LORD is far from the wicked, but the prayer of the just he hears.”

Gospel - Luke 9:22-25

22 Saying: The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected by the ancients and chief priests and scribes and be killed and the third day rise again.
23 And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: for he that shall lose his life for my sake shall save it.
25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world and lose himself and cast away himself?

Is It Time to End the Death Penalty in Kansas?

As a conservative and former career law enforcement officer, my attitude on crime and punishment is to say, bluntly tough, very tough. I understand cause and effect and the importance of good public safety to protect and serve the public as well as the necessity to imprison those who commit offenses. In some cases, those offenses are unthinkable. But when a government imposes death on another, I see a danger on many levels.

In 1994, Kansas revisited the death penalty issue and as a result, the legislature voted to bring back the death penalty. But looking at it from different points of view has this 1994 Law proved its value?

Fact One: No Inmates Executed – Kansas has not executed anyone since 1965. This includes the 14 years after the death penalty was re-imposed in 1994. There are presently nine on death row in Kansas. I have been personally involved with four of these cases to some extent as a former KBI agent. Those cases were Gary Klepas, the Carr Brothers (Reginald and Jonathon) and John Robinson. All four are less than acceptable human being’s as I’m sure are the other five.

Fact Two: Government Spending – Kansas spends a vast amount of money on juries and court-related hearings on either defending or prosecuting death penalty cases. Not during the trial, but as a result of already being convicted. Yes, once a death penalty inmate is convicted that is just the beginning of a whole new series of court hearings and legal work. It is hard to determine the total cost of a death penalty in Kansas. Expenses are incurred by both state and local government entities. While some individual costs are known, other costs such as local and state prosecution and court expenses are not itemized. In the John Robinson case alone, over $750,000 has been spent defending him from death.

Fact Three: The Moral Implications – As a practicing Catholic there are some non-negotiable beliefs that one must posses in order to receive the Sacraments. One is the belief that God who gives life must also be the one who takes away life. Although the Church does not place the death penalty into this category, one must ask, should a government allow the killing of humans in a non-defensive way? We certainly have the right to defend ourselves, and others, and kill if we, or others are being attacked or threatened. But after the fact, when the threat is over are we still to kill? There have been times in society when there has been lawlessness and chaos and the only defense for protection was to put someone to death. But we are not living in those times. If we lock someone up for life and allow them to die in God’s time, would they have more of a chance to know and love God?

“Nowadays, in America as elsewhere in the world, a model of society appears to be emerging in which the powerful predominate, setting aside and even eliminating the powerless: I am thinking here of unborn children, helpless victims of abortion; the elderly and incurably ill, subjected at times to euthanasia; and the many other people relegated to the margins of society by consumerism and materialism. Nor can I fail to mention the unnecessary recourse to the death penalty when other "bloodless means are sufficient to defend human lives against an aggressor and to protect public order and the safety of persons. Today, given the means at the State's disposal to deal with crime and control those who commit it, without abandoning all hope of their redemption, the cases where it is absolutely necessary to do away with an offender 'are now very rare, even non-existent practically'". (Pope John Paul II, Ecclesia in America January 1999)

Fact Four: The Constitution – The United States allows for the death penalty and certainly it has been used in past cases. But the question is, what if we are wrong? Is there corruption and cover-ups in government? Are mistakes made in government? Is it possible for the pressure of a case to be built up so much that an innocent man is arrested and convicted of a crime? While this is rare, the answer of course is yes. People have been let out of prison after serving many years based on DNA evidence that has cleared the accused. Since 1990 and the advent of DNA, 13 out of 113 death row inmates have been exonerated by the use of DNA. Is it worth even one mistake to end a life?

I’ve had a few liberals say to me, “Well, if you are pro-life, what about the death penalty?” I say back to them, “If you help to make abortions illegal, I will certainly back a law making the death penalty illegal.”

It’s time to end this government spending farce called the death penalty. All it has become is nothing more than a term politicians use to call themselves “tough on crime”. Are we willing to trade feeling good as opposed to the reality of the consequences? The death penalty promotes more government spending, it has severe moral consequences and it may cause constitutional issues if the convicted is innocent.

Are you prepared to keep the death penalty on the books according to the true facts?
