<Bills to tighten abortion laws
Story
“All Kansans have a right to expect that existing laws limiting late-term abortions in Kansas will be followed and enforced,” said state Rep. Lance Kinzer, R-Olathe. Among the numerous changes to the state’s late-term abortion law, the proposals would require abortion providers to offer a woman the opportunity to view an ultrasound image of the baby.

New AG ignores Grand Jury Subpoena

Attorney general Stephen Six is resisting a subpoena from a grand jury that is investigating abortion provider Dr. George Tiller. Mary Kay Culp, executive director of Kansans for Life, the state's largest anti-abortion group, said she is appalled. Her group had been wary of Six because of his appointment by Sebelius, a strong abortion rights supporter.

Bill introduced proposes new Judicial Selection Protocols

Legislation has been introduced by Rep. Lance Kinzer (R-Olathe) regarding judicial selection. The proposed legislation, which is co-sponsored by 23 members of the House, would change the make-up of the state’s judicial nominating commission and would subject the Governor’s nominee to Senate confirmation.

Liberal Group Seeks Minimum Wage Bill

However, in response to the proposed bill Arthur Hall, executive director of the Center for Applied Economics at KU’s School of Business, said in submitted testimony that “there is general agreement that these (minimum wage) laws do more harm than good” by reducing employment opportunities for young people and those with fewer skills. Ron Hein, a lobbyist with the Kansas Restaurant and Hospitality Association, said increases in the minimum wage cause employers to not hire as many unskilled workers. He suggested getting rid of the state minimum wage altogether.

Democrat Senate Candidate Exits Race

Businessman Greg Orman's abrupt exit from Kansas' U.S. Senate race over unspecified differences with supporters leaves the state Democratic Party without a prominent candidate to face Republican Sen. Pat Roberts this fall. Orman ended his campaign on with a statement saying "the compromises necessary to be elected were unacceptable." In an interview Tuesday, he suggested that he was feeling too much pressure from some Democratic groups to take positions he didn't agree with. "Whenever you run as a candidate in either party, there are certain constituencies that want you to behave and act and believe certain things," Orman told The Associated Press from his home in Olathe. "As I evaluated the race and looked at the positions I was going to have to take to get the support that was necessary to win, I just didn't feel comfortable taking those positions."

Former Mizzou Star is running for Congress

Brock Olivo, a star running back whose college jersey number is retired, told a crowd of about 200 at a Gasconade County Republican Party dinner on Friday that he wants to go to Congress. "Put the ball in my hands. I want to be the citizen's politician," he said.

Shawnee Police Officer Shot
Story
A Shawnee police officer was shot early today but not seriously injured because of his protective vest, police said. An 18-year old male was arrested.
