January, 2007: From the Kansas Federalist -- In Defense of Life

Each month the Kansas Federalist will bring a topic of noted interest to the forefront for discussion and focus our entire edition with information about that topic. For January, TKF has chosen “In Defense of Life”.

Pro-lifers fill snow-packed Washington for annual rally and march
Approximately 500,000 participants from around the country had gathered in Washington over a chilly weekend, to pray, protest, and gain information about the pro-life movement. The weekend’s events, which include an enormous Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and a youth rally, which overflowed the city’s Verizon Center, culminated in a rally and march through the heart of American government.

The Media's Annual 'Let's Downplay the Washington March for Life ...
For the 34th year, the media has failed to cover the National Right to Life Rally and March in our nation’s capitol. U.S. Capitol Police estimates are nearly 500,000 marchers when the AP and other papers refer to a few thousand on hand to attend the event. And yet a recent anti-war rally in DC received national headlines across the country. Estimations on that march were 75,000. Liberal bias in the press is alive and well in our country.

News: New Congress Changes Tone of Anti-Abortion Rally
They all praised the GOP's pursuit of an anti-abortion agenda. Bush cited promotion of adoption, support for parental notification laws for minors seeking abortions, an end to federal funding for abortions overseas and the funding of crisis pregnancy programs as hallmarks of his presidency. He also noted that he had signed into law a ban on partial-birth abortions, saying it would be vigorously defended before the Supreme Court, where it faces a challenge.

Thousands upon thousands of Americans – young, old, lay, and religious – packed the streets of Washington, D.C. today, as they took part in the 34th annual March for Life. Pro-life protesters worked their way down Pennsylvania Avenue, past the U.S. Capitol building, to the steps of the Supreme Court where, in 1973, the Court decided that women should have a “right” to abort their children.

Abortion : A Major Crisis in the African-American Community [1 of 10]
Do you know what the leading cause of death in the African American Community since 1973 is? Think about it for a minute. Is it heart disease-2,266,789 deaths since 1973, cancer-1,638,350, or accidents-370,723? Is it AIDS-203,695, or violent crimes-306, 313? There is one possibility that is often overlooked. It happens 1452 times a day in our community. It has taken over 13 million Black lives within the last 30 years. It has taken 1/3 of our present population. What is it? ABORTION!

The political lesson is clear: A candidate who espouses the extreme views of Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America without reservation is at a distinct disadvantage in today's America.

FULL STORY -- Abortion in Our Own Backyard
Although Wichita is notorious for being the home of the abortionist Dr. George Tiller, three of the four primary abortion clinics in Kansas are located in Wyandotte and Johnson counties. They are: Aid for Women, in Kansas City, Kan.; and the Center for Women ’s Health and Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood, both in Overland Park.

Baby, breathing after 'abortion,' found dead 1 week later
Police had been summoned to the business after an 18-year-old went for an abortion, but the baby was born while she waited, and she observed the little girl breathing before a business worker came and put the baby in a biohazard bag.

Call center adds option to give instant advice and counsel
"It only makes sense that Instant Messaging is the fastest growing contact channel for the demographic segment facing a potential crisis pregnancy," according to a statement from the organization called www.OptionLine.org.

Abortion loophole or legal prudence?
The protesters’ goal in Wichita was clear: draw awareness to Tiller’s clinic, one of a few in the U.S. specializing in late-term abortions. In many cases those abortions are carried out on fetuses developed enough to survive if born prematurely.

Proud to be a Pro-Life American

I was truly blessed with the opportunity to be one of the chaperones of 50 high school students from Bishop Miege, Bishop Ward and Rockhurst to the National Right to Life March in Washington DC last week. Of the 50 students, my two oldest children attended the event with me. After a 22-hour bus ride that included fun and games, moments of silence, prayer services, and a couple of movies, we arrived in our Nation’s Capitol.

Saturday was full of visiting memorial and historic sites. Sunday was a morning tour of the Holocaust Museum and then to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception for a 4PM general Mass and then a 7PM special Mass for the intention of protecting life in which approximately 7,000 worshipers participated. Cardinal Rigali of Philadelphia celebrated the Mass with approximately 500 priests, bishops, and archbishops, including Archbishop Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas and Bishop Finn of Kansas City, Missouri. In between the Masses we prayed the rosary and took tours of one of the largest Catholic churches in the nation.

Monday morning was a special Mass for Kansan’s at St Matthews Cathedral in downtown D.C. We then walked from our hotel to the National Mall and attended the National Right to Life Rally and then marched to the Capitol. Some marchers chanted, many prayed but there was no disrespect displayed nor did I see even a significant number of counter-protestors. Tuesday morning came and we arrived at Arlington National Cemetery in time for the changing of the guard and the daily lying of the wreath. We then went to visit the US Marine Memorial and then departed Washington D.C. for the long trip home and back to Kansas.

As we drove back, all 50 of us had a turn in taking the microphone and reflecting on the events of the past few days. The young folks as well as the adults all indicated how proud they were and further reinforced their dedication that we are on the right path in our country. The path to respect life from conception to death. When I spoke, I was overcome with an even bigger picture. The symbolism that occurred to me in that moment was one rooted in Federalism and I addressed it to the bus riders in the middle of the night as we traveled down the road in central Indiana. That address is below:

‘Even today, over 225 years since our country’s founding, we have freedoms that many, in the world, will never possess. My friends were able to drive half way across the United States of America and back, across multiple jurisdictions, without papers or registering, even in a time of war. We were able to have religious freedom, multiple times, without fear or revocation. We were able to attend a rally and march of nearly a half-million citizens to address our grievances, without government interference or retribution. And then we paid our respects and appreciation to the very citizens that made it possible: The brave soldiers who gave their lives in order to let us have those freedoms. I love this country and I ask that you love her too. Your Founding Fathers would be proud of you, as am I. Now go back to your communities and embrace your freedoms.’

Life is precious life is sacred. May God bless America.
